At Want 2 Work, we help people like you start a job in the Netherlands every day.
In this article, we take you step by step through what to expect. Here's how to get you off to a good start
prepared for your new work and life.

Dutch work culture: fair, equal and direct

Imagine: you arrive at your new workplace for the first time. Your colleagues greet you kindly
with a hand or nod, and soon you are in the middle of a team meeting. Much is discussed and
everyone seems to give their opinion. Even against the boss. That takes some getting used to, but also
refreshing.

In the Netherlands, direct communication is the norm. People usually say what they think, without
detours. That may come across as a bit blunt at first, but it is precisely meant to be open and
clear. Your opinion counts, even if you are just starting out.

In addition, there is little hierarchy. Managers are approachable and colleagues speak to each other
to the first name. Your position does not determine your value in the team. Everyone becomes equal
handled and you are expected to take initiative.

What you need to arrange before you can start

Before you can start working in the Netherlands, you need to arrange a number of practical matters.
Don't worry, you don't have to do it alone. We are happy to guide you, step by step.

Registering with the municipality and applying for a BSN
Your first step is to register with a Dutch municipality. There you will receive a
Citizen service number (BSN). You need this number to receive salary, pay tax
pay and take out health insurance. Without a BSN, you cannot officially work.

Taking out health insurance
Everyone working in the Netherlands is obliged to take out basic health insurance. That
insurance covers GP care, emergency care and medicines, among other things. You choose
an insurer. Many providers also have information in English, and we at Want 2 Work
can help you make a choice.

Opening a Dutch bank account
To receive your salary, you need a Dutch bank account. There are
several banks where you can easily open an account, often with English-speaking
support. Here too, we can help you on your way.

Your salary, payslip and taxes

As soon as you start working, you will receive a pay slip every month. This tells you exactly what your
earned, what has been deducted in tax and what will eventually be credited to your account
deposited.

Minimum wage and fair pay
The Netherlands has a legal minimum wage that is adjusted twice a year. If you work via
Because 2 Work, then we make sure you always get what you are entitled to. No surprises,
just clarity.

Wage tax credit: keep more from your wages
If you work in the Netherlands, you can opt for wage tax credits. This means that you get less
pay tax, and thus receive more net pay. Note that you may only receive this discount at one
employer at the same time. On your first day of work, we will discuss together whether you want to apply this.

You don't have to do it alone. Working in a new country brings questions. About
paperwork, rules, work arrangements or simply about how to find your way in another country.
